Esalen® Massage in the Side-Lying Position

Nora Matten

Join Nora in exploring the core principles of Esalen® Massage: the quality of touch and presence, long integrative flowing strokes, and the use of passive movement—all practiced in the side-lying position.

A Unique Doorway to the Body

The side-lying position offers a unique doorway into the body. From this orientation, the practitioner can access both the front and back of the body with ease, creating a sense of wholeness and continuity. Supported comfortably on the side, clients often experience a deep sense of safety and containment, supporting the nervous system to relax and inviting a deeper sense of opening and letting go.

Versatile and Supportive

Working in the side-lying position expands the practitioner’s possibilities while maintaining flow. This approach is especially supportive for:

  • Pregnant women seeking comfort and ease.

  • Individuals with physical limitations who cannot lie comfortably on their belly (prone) or back (supine).

  • Clients in emotional processes who may be navigating tender or vulnerable states and need a heightened sense of safety and trust.

What to Expect

In this workshop, participants will learn how to apply the principles of Esalen® Massage to this versatile position. You will discover how to maintain the signature long strokes and integrative flow while offering your clients a profound feeling of support and deep contact with themselves.
