Esalen® Massage Techniques for the Neck

With Ingrid May

In this hands-on class, we explore the neck as both a structural crossroad and a subtle listening space. Drawing from osteopathy, physiotherapy, and the fluid, presence-centered approach of Esalen Massage, you will learn how to work with the cervical area in a way that is both precise and deeply restorative.

We begin by understanding the architecture of the neck—its joints, deep stabilizers, muscular chains, and their relationship to breath and posture. Through gentle osteopathic principles, you will practice palpation that follows ease rather than force, allowing tissues to guide your touch toward areas needing attention.

From physiotherapy, we add practical techniques that support functional mobility: soft-tissue release, passive and active range of motion, and mindful stretching that respects each client’s unique patterning.

Esalen Massage brings the unifying thread—long, integrative strokes, attunement, and a sense of wholeness. These elements soften the work, creating a bridge between structural refinement and embodied relaxation.

Throughout the class you will learn:

  • Subtle and effective techniques for releasing tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper thoracic region

  • How to combine joint mobilization, myofascial unwinding, and fluid strokes into a coherent session

  • How to use your presence, breath, and body mechanics to work with depth without strain

  • Ways to support clients who experience headaches, stress-related tension, or restricted neck mobility

This class is ideal for Practitioners who want to refine their touch, expand their toolkit, and cultivate a more holistic approach to neck work. You will leave with techniques that are grounded in anatomy, enriched by movement science, and infused with the spacious, heart-centered quality of Esalen Massage.
